We like this new research indicating that an individual's happiness is greatly influence by the happiness by folks with two or three degrees of separation. That is to say, if your friends' friends' friends are happy, you will feel it.

We know it works the other way. If someone gets pissed off and yells at their spouse, who happens to be, say, a police chief, and that person goes into work cranky and takes it out on his underlings, everyone who comes into contact with traffic cops from that district is going to have a lousy day. So random acts of kindness and senseless beauty have ripple effects as well. Everyone touches the universe.
